Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take me to reach reading proficiency?

Progress will vary depending on the amount of time the student devotes to the effort, but our average progress rate is one grade level of reading improvement for every three Read Now tutoring sessions. Each session lasts from 40-60 minutes.

How can I become a Read Now student?

Call our phone number or email us and we will conduct an initial interview to determine if you are a good fit for our services. Students with reading problems will be paired with a tutor to start the training process that will result in the silent reading skill. All our Read Now sessions are one on one with a student and a volunteer tutor.

How much do Read Now services cost?

All Read Now services are provided at no charge.

What are the qualifications for a Read Now student?

Read Now students must be able to communicate orally with their tutor. Read Now students are those who wish to remediate a reading problem.  Read Now defines a reading problem as a situation where the student can understand a text when it is read aloud to them, but struggles to read that same text silently.

How will I meet with my reading tutor?

All tutoring sessions are conducted using the Zoom platform. Students must therefore have internet access and download the Zoom app, when necessary.

I believe I am dyslexic. Can Read Now help me?

Since Read Now understands textual literacy as a cognitive rather than a linguistic problem, dyslexia is normally not an issue for our silent reading methodology.

What are the qualifications for becoming a Read Now tutor?

Read Now tutors must be 18 years of age or older and be without reading problems as defined above. Read Now tutors must complete a free training program, pass a background check and agree to the Read Now Volunteer Tutor Code of Conduct.

How can I apply to be a Read Now volunteer literacy tutor?

Please complete and return the Volunteer Application form either electronically or by scanning and emailing a hard copy of the form.
